Chapter Ten

Stephen

Stephen fell ill with a fever although he didn’t know it at the time. The coming days were a blur of cars and trains. Hands sponged his burning body with tepid water and moistened his lips. They lifted him from one bed to another and soft voices talked over him, lulling him back into unconsciousness.

He wasn’t sure if he was alive and dreaming or dead and floating in the ether. Time seemed indeterminate.

Finally, he came back to awareness in cool stillness, the pillows plump beneath his head, the covers around him luxurious. He opened his eyes, looked at the high, ornate ceiling and the crimson drapes on the four-poster bed. Something from last century, maybe European. He turned his head stiffly and felt a flash of pain shiver over his scalp. A fire burned cheerily in the grate, dappling the dim room with shadows. The heavy curtains at the window were closed.

Stephen was confused. He retraced his last steps and thought he should have been lying dead in No Man’s Land not snoozing in luxury in a fine, old-fashioned chamber. The door was half open and voices floated in to him.

“You must be crazy to come back to Vienna.” Stephen recognised the voice. A shudder snaked up his spine as Istvan’s exotic accent washed over him.

“You’re here so that makes you crazy too.” The other man had a German accent.

“Don’t you think Emil has a long memory?”

“Of course he does. He’s biding his time. He’s never in a rush to exact revenge.”

Istvan sighed. “I don’t know why we came here. But I wanted to see you. Safety in numbers and all that.”

“You know it’s good to see you, my friend. I’ve missed you.”

“I’ve missed you too.”

Stephen slipped from bed and stood barefoot, unsteady on the polished wooden floorboards. He wore a white nightgown. Once his dizziness had receded, he walked to the door and pulled it open. There were four men in the drawing room beyond and they turned to look at him. He recognised two of them—Istvan and Sam. The third man stood close to Istvan and was evidently the one whose voice Stephen had just heard. He was tall, blond and lean, with an ethereal beauty about him. The fourth man lounged silently in a chair, as dark as the other man was blond, his hair cropped short, his eyes a startling violet. Stunningly attractive.

Stephen clutched hold of the door for support, suddenly afraid. He saw all four men for what they were.

Vampires.

Istvan started forward and Stephen instantly shrank back.

“Don’t be afraid,” Istvan said softly, a hand on Stephen’s shoulder. “We are all friends here.”

Stephen scanned the two strangers with suspicious eyes. His gaze moved to Sam who regarded him with a kind of sad smile. “You’re all friends,” Stephen said. “I’m on the dinner menu.”

“No.” Istvan slipped an arm around his back and ushered Stephen forward into the centre of the room. He felt ridiculously exposed in his nightgown, calves and feet bare. Istvan gestured to the blond man.
